Adults

The ‘official’ measure of local smoking prevalence is based on the Annual Population Survey.  Based on prevalence rates reported in the most recent survey (2015), it is estimated that roughly 1,300 adult residents of the City smoke (Table 1).

Young people

Based on survey data, it is estimated that roughly two 15 year old residents of the City of London smoke regularly or occasionally. Around eight are estimated to use other tobacco products, including shisha (Table 2).

Nationally, 5% of 11-15 year olds report being occasional or regular smokers, but we do not have robust local estimates for smoking prevalence in this age group. 8  As for 15 year olds, it is likely that local prevalence is lower (see Figure 21), but as a crude estimate, applying this national prevalence rate to the resident population gives an estimate of 25 11-15 year old residents in the City who currently smoke.

Table 2: Estimated number of City of London residents age 15 who smoke (2016)
Prevalence (City and Hackney combined) City estimated number
Current smokers 5.8% 2
Regular smokers 3.4% 1
Occasional smokers 3.2% 1
Use of e-cigarette 9.7% 3
Use of other tobacco products 23.6% 8
